Cod and Congers – 21st January 2010

BY Mick - UPDATED 04/03/2020

Well what a lovely day to head out for a spot of fishing out of Brighton.  The weather is lovely and the sea as calm as they come.  Today we were out with 8 lovely lads and headed off to a spot where the rough ground has been producing some nice cod.

A good variety of baits were being used along with the usual cuttle that has been catching so well.

The first cod came on a great big bait of lugworm and was landed by the only chap on board who had decided to up-tide and weighed in at over 10lb.

Over the next hour we added a few more cod to the nets along with some good-sized whiting.  There was some really good banter going on between everyone and the day was off to a good start.

By about 11am the bites were still coming but we all decided to move off the mark and try something different, so we headed a little further off-shore to a small wreck to spice things up a bit.

Everyone baited up and lines out saw an immediate flurry of very strong bites.  The tide was as good as slack and that meant only one thing.   Conger!!!!

Having not planned to be fishing for conger we lost a few along with gear but before long they were being battled to the surface. After a good fight we were ready to boat the first, but as it surfaced it twisted and was lost.  A fine eel it was too.

All was not lost and before long the first conger came on board and it weighed in at 20lb. This really did kick off the action with a lot of huffing and puffing.  The rods were bending, I personally spent over an half an hour with one which totally wrecked the gears on the reel I was using only to be followed by the next conger bite that was equally determined to stay on the bottom and in the end snapped my rod twice before I gave in and cut the line loose.  During this battle another lovely conger was landed just a little lighter but much longer than the first.

After getting a little fed up with losing gear (we all had light tackle) we decided to go to another mark to finish of the day and to catch the first of the ebb tide which produced another cod before the onset of dusk called time out for today.

All had a very enjoyable day.

Caught today: – Cod, Conger, Whiting, Pout & just the one Dogfish.
